Stronger Porcelain for Veneers, Inlays/Onlays, & Crowns
Newer porcelain systems have recently surfaced in the field of cosmetic dentistry. As any reputable cosmetic dentist will tell you, the struggle with crafting high quality porcelain veneers has always been getting things to be BOTH beautiful and strong. It used to be that placing porcelain on teeth that were subjected to heavy forces (like heavy mastication forces, or clenching/grinding) were contraindicated.
IPS e.Max
- Ivoclar Vivadent’s patented lithium disilicate material (fracture resistant porcelain) is truly a revolution for the field of cosmetic dentistry. Never before has a material been able to combine high strength, high esthetics, and ease of use into one product; until now. The porcelain system is called e.max lithium disilicate.
- IPS e.Max lithium disilicate restorations exhibit extreme durability, featuring 360-400 MPA of flexural strength. When fabricated to full-contour, the monolithic structure is the most robust ceramic system tested to date.
- The opalescence, translucency, and light diffusion properties of IPS e.max lithium disilicate were all designed to replicate natural tooth structure for beauty and undetectable restorations; even on teeth that are subjected to high forces.
New York Study
- Studies have been done at New York University dental material department to determine how strong e.Max is vs. traditional porcelain systems. The studies proved that:
- Approximately 90% veneered zirconia specimens failed by 350 N independent of the number of cycles (Appendix 1) (TRADITIONAL PORCELAIN SYSTEM).
- None of the e.max CAD lithium disilicate specimens failed below 900 N and 180k cycles independent of loading profile.
e.Max is strong, but it is beautiful?
- IPS e.Max lithium disilicate offers esthetic options, regardless of the fabrication technique used. Lithium disilicate is available in 16 A-D shades and 4 bleach shades with 4 levels of translucency to choose from; creating exceptional true-to-nature restorations.
