Is There a Way to Reduce a Gummy Smile? Dr. Peter Boulden Discusses Your Options
Is there a way to reduce a gummy smile? As an Atlanta cosmetic dentist, this is a question that I and my partner Dr. Susan Estep get asked all of the time. The fact of the matter is that yes, there is a simple, yet very effective way to reduce your gummy smile.
A gummy smile is one that has a poor tooth to gum ratio (too much of the gums are showing). It’s a fairly common problem that many people are born with; however, some people develop insecurities because of it. Some gummy smiles can be mild, while some can become quite severe. No matter what your particular case is, you will be relieved to know that there are ways to reduce the appearance of a gummy smile.
Dr. Estep and I have both heard of many crazy ways to reduce a gummy smile, which range from breaking your jaw and replacing it higher, cutting your gums and replacing your teeth with veneers, or receiving botox treatments on your upper lip. These procedures not only sound painful, but are very costly and potentially dangerous. They also fail to address the initial problem, which is the size of the gum tissue. Why make such a difficult process out of something that has such a simple solution? We have created a much simpler, more efficient way of correcting this problem.
When someone has a gummy smile it may look as if they just have small teeth and big gums. Only part of this is true. It is not that they have small teeth necessarily; it is just they have too much gum tissue covering their teeth. This gum tissue can easily be removed to improve the gum to teeth ratio.
We simply use a laser to sculpt and remove some of the gum tissue to reveal the true length of your teeth. It is as simple as that. This procedure is painless and only takes a short amount of time. As top Atlanta dentists we can do this procedure in 15 minutes or less because it is such a simple fix. Why would you spend tons of money on a painful procedure that only hides a gummy smile? Our procedure is a real solution to a gummy smile, and not just some drastic, painful cosmetic surgery.
